A Timeless Fusion of Victorian Terrace Charm and Contemporary Design

Henry House is a beautifully restored 140-year-old Victorian terrace home, thoughtfully renovated and extended with a striking contemporary rear ground floor addition. Located in a heritage-rich neighbourhood known for its pristine 19th-century terraces, this WALA project balances historic preservation with modern living.

Preserving the unique character of the original structure was paramount. The renovation was approached with sensitivity to heritage elements. The classic Victorian features were respectfully retained while integrating new, functional spaces.

The original structure boasted strong architectural bones, allowing the design team to focus their efforts on the modern rear extension. One of the project’s central design goals was to replace the traditional segmented hallway with a more fluid, open-plan spatial arrangement. A yellow Ligne Roset Dita console was added for style and a pop of colour in the hallway.

The new layout offers a seamless flow along the home’s central spine, culminating in a large feature window and custom daybed that visually and physically extend the living space into the elevated rear garden. Additional seating was added into the home by Bea Lambos, including an Anda armchair by Ligne Roset.

Maximizing the home’s north-facing orientation, the reimagined living area is bathed in natural light, enhancing both comfort and sustainability. The new extension utilizes natural materials such as timber, concrete, and steel in clean, modern lines—providing a striking contrast to the ornate detailing of the original home.

This carefully considered renovation and extension not only revitalises Henry House but also adds a bold new chapter to its architectural narrative—melding heritage and innovation in a harmonious, light-filled home designed for contemporary life.
